During the 17th century in Haiti there existed a group of female warriors who served the
Dahomey Kingdom and were fierce at war and considered healers and "mothers" of the nation.
They were known as the Dahomey Amazons as they reminded them
of the mystical and powerful all women’s army called Amazons in Greek mythology.
This beautiful depiction of such a warrior is needle felted with
Merino Tops, Corriedale and Wensleydale wools.
She is embellished with a variety of turquoise nuggets and beads, hand carved bone beads, crackle pearls, Swarovski crystals, copper beads, hand blown glass beads,
and copper wire and anodized aluminum wires.
Her headdress comprised of wool dreads, Wensleydale wool curly locks, and Merino tops wool feathers hand felted, sits behind a beautiful rare 1950's celluloid button.
Her loin cover is beaded with hand carved bone beading, smoked glass bead & turquoise on copper wire
The hip adornment is fashioned with strings of paper hand rolled haitian beads,
copper beads, chips of dyed sea shell squares,
and Genuine Swarovski crystals.....Excellent for transfer of energy.
Arm and legs bracelets are on solid copper wire,
with hand blown glass beads, turquoise nuggets and hand crafted clay beads.
She sports and genuine Jamaican coin, brought home from my travels, above her heart.
A small trinket pocket for personal items is felted on her back with one crackled pearl.
She carries a handcrafted arrowhead of Jasper stone, an aggregate of microgranular quartz,
with hand carved bone and turquoise nugget beading on solid copper wire.
Her skull trophy is decorated with punked style metal, seed bead, and wire embellishments.
A handcrafted wood stand with wool felted pad is included,
along with two pins of turquoise, handblown glass and copper wire.
She stands 23 inches tall and approximately 11 inchess wide with her headdress.
